Varvari – Barbarians – Budućnost Podgorica

The Barbarians were founded in 1987, while the first gatherings and cheering at the “Podgorica” stadium started much earlier, almost a decade before proper organized cheering. In April 1987, the encounter with Rijeka, or Armada, is considered the first “record” of supporters in Podgorica. From then on, the history of the “Barbarians” begins, the largest supporter group in Montenegro and one of the most respected in the ex-Yugoslav area – intertwined with everything that makes up the life of ultras, with ups and downs, choreographies, and inevitable incidents.

From its foundation to the present day, the social, even geographical map of the Balkans has changed several times, which has affected the number, and once resulted in the cessation of existence. Initially, the number was up to 500 people, when the urban spirit was developing in Podgorica, which was reluctant to accept Western trends, especially looking unfavorably on the Ultras culture and all that it entails. The “Barbarians” soon became a homogeneous and strong group. The first, amateur banners, the first flares, away matches, and a significant rise marked the nervous first five years. The current team of “Barbarians” re-established the group in June 1994 at a match with Vojvodina. The nineties and the beginning of the 21st century were marked by the breakup of two states and Montenegrin independence, so the group thundered through as many as three leagues, increasingly working on organization and numbers, requisites, and banners.

They never missed any away matches in the joint league of Serbia and Montenegro, nor did they allow their club to be without support. Away, there were between 50 and 300 people, while at home, the number was never below 400. Matches with Belgrade clubs are remembered, where there were up to 2,500 people in the ultras stand. The brotherly group of Barbarians is Meraklije Niš, a supporter group following FK Radnički Niš (Serbia), and their friendship dates back to the time of Yugoslavia.

The “Barbarians” continued their constant rise and struggle despite the faltering ultras story in Montenegro, as well as numerous problems they encountered.
